Review:

To start things off, I will name one aspect that is unbeatable: the price. In comparison with competing products, save for open source software, it's the cheapest one out there.

Though from there on, it gets a bit tricky, for in it's essence, the program is rather controversial.

Firstly, its capability regarding audio quality is rather good, though it heavily depends on the sound card being used. If the card is good, the sound is too; if the card is mediocre, then that's the result the software gives as well.

Secondly, the program is oriented to the recording part, which, I must confess, works great; and not so much to the actual creation or composition. The n-Track studio is compatible with pretty much all 3rd party instruments and plugins, but heavily lacks those of it's own. The plugins it does have, are various basic effects, which might do the trick for casual messing around, but are not up to creating professional mixes. That's the main issue that loses the charm of the price tag. The additional investments won't look so good at all.

So... No big deal, you just want something to begin with and find something better when you've learned the basics, right? - I'm afraid... not quite.

The n-Track studio might actually work rather well for (semi-)professionals (who are probably using something else entirely anyway), but it's not very welcoming/friendly at all towards beginners. Although the official site offers various support and there are a few tutorial videos on YouTube, the program is rather complex and even uncomfortable to use.

It DOES work on Windows and Mac and can be installed on multiple computers, but... The same applies for quite a few of it's competitors as well.

But enough ranting.

DO buy it, if , for example, you're looking for software to record and edit your band's demo and have a somewhat decent knowledge of "what's that knob do."

DO NOT buy it, if you want to produce professional audio or if you want to LEARN to produce.

Conclusion:

Dirt-cheap recording platform, but rather useless for composing. Features a horrible lack of plugins and is not very user-friendly. Decent audio quality, but overall, a bad investment.
