Review:

Wow. I haven’t appreciated a program for its sheer simplicity and functionality this much since the unveiling of Morpheus and Kazaa.

Rhymesaurus developers make it possible to intelligently navigate a database of words. It includes a basic dictionary and thesaurus, as well as not so common features of the rhyme search, word surf, and pattern builder. The rhyme search grants the liberty of searching for rhymes with a host of criteria that gives the user the option of tightening or relaxing the strictness of search results; results are also organized in terms of syllabic length. The word surf offers definitions for phrases or words and then links to definitions of the searched word’s synonyms. The pattern feature takes a little practice learning to reap its full potential, but it is still effective even if searching is built on a little bit of faith.

Rhymesaurus’s effectiveness is at the heart of my praise. Its applications are useful to anyone pursuing that right word and it also has a place in education. With the ability to search colloquial terms such as “hit the hay,” “kick the bucket,” and “keel over,” this is a useful reference tool for those trying to learn English in all its nuances. Of course, all expressions are not currently available, but the potential for a larger database exists.

The tips and help offer strong support and usability especially with the plethora of rhyme criteria for searching. The help guide gives a definition of each criteria furthering both the understanding of the program’s capabilities while providing a quick Grammar lesson.

If most people are like me in that they’ve learned 75% of their vocabulary from pressing SHIFT + F7 (access thesaurus) in MS Word, then Rhymesaurus takes the user to the next level of literacy. It would be nice to see the capabilities of this software bundled with MS Word to make its features more readily applicable.

Conclusion:

Rhymesaurus is worth every penny if writing has any bearing on what you do or need to accomplish. With a database that I would assume is evolving, it will only get better.
