"A man chooses, a slave obeys." ~ Andrew Ryan

As you start the game, you are greeted with, what seems like the beginning of a movie, looking through the main character, Jack's, eyes at the cabin of a plane. His inner monologue plays out, and, as it finishes, the screen goes black, and you hear the sound of a plane going down. With a splash, the title of the game, "BioShock", appears on the screen, as if you where at the movies.

BioShock is a 'Genetically' Enhanced First Person Shooter; and, it surely lives up to it. From injecting blue-filled shots into your veins from hunting the creatures called "Big Daddies"; this game has a lot to offer. Even a majority of the glitches I ran into seemed to lighten the mood a bit, and didn't take much from the game play. Personally, I thought it was an awesome game, but, here is my, somewhat biased, review:

You live through the hell-hold that is Rapture through the eyes of Jack, the main character with a secret that, even he, doesn't remember! It seems to capture you in a state as if it was a movie at first, and, may even draw you as far into the game where you start jumping at the smallest noise and second guessing each action you take.

Rapture, the underwater 'Paradise' that is slowly crumbling, is where the game takes place. As you travel through it, you will meet rememberable characters, as well as see some interesting plot twists that you, most likely, didn't see coming. It is quite well written; and, when you first start out, it is captivating.

Even the 'Splicers', humans too 'spliced' up on adam, aren't always in the same spot; instead, having a patrol route. They whistle tunes, check out dead bodies, and talk amongst each other. Yet, after a while of traveling, their motions get repetitive, their dialouge old, and, their tendency to walk into each other and get stuck, annoying.

Splicers also have the tendency to appear where they are not wanted, though, they do not interrupt areas where a main event may take place, may ruin your 'Audio Diary' by yelling something along the lines of "I see you monster!"; even when they may not be near you. Though, the first time through the game, you won't mind this as much as a nuisance as you may if you were trying to delve yourself into the lore.

Big Daddy fights, if ill prepared, can be quite hard, and, may take several tries if you are not careful. I found no problems with the big daddy in the easier difficulties of the game, but, as I played through the hardest setting, I found them to get a little bit glitchy and fairly annoying. You don't really need to worry about such glitches when you are playing on the lower level difficulties, but, on hard, I found myself getting sniped down by the ranged big daddy, the 'Rosie', quite often.

As mentioned before, there are some glitches, but, a majority have either been fixed or aren't a major inconvience. Most of you have probably seen or heard of the small glitch where a dead splicer waves 'Good-bye'; well, every so often, it happens; usually to the ones that were killed in an exotic way.

But, some glitches are a bit more annoying. One of the glitches prevented some from getting the 'Historian' achievment, where they accidentally listed on audio diary under the wrong place, making it so, even if you have them all, you can't get the achievement. Another one I found was where a big daddy was outside the level with a little sister, and was able to attack me while all I could do was shoot the glass and wall.

All of this, both the good points and bad points, lead up to the ending; one that you would think would be epic. Yet, it isn't so. The last boss seems like it was taken from a DC/Marvel comic rather than made for the game. On top of that, he was quite easy to beat, taking less than ten minutes to down him and get through the ending cut scenes.

All in all, I found this game to be quite fun, and was enjoyable up to the end, and I would recommend it.

Conclusion:

I would highly recommend this game despite its problems. If you are looking for an immersive game with a good backstory, look no further. If you are looking for fast-paced action with innovative gameplay, this is not for you.
