Intro

Just like the title says, there’s nothing like a word game to remind me that I’m an idiot.

The Story

In yet another incarnation of Scrabble, this game takes the word genre and really makes it challenging. There are two versions of the game to play in this program but the only difference is that one is timed and one isn’t and so I’m just going to focus on how the game works.

You are given letters down at the bottom of the screen and a board in front of you that you have to create words on. The bigger the word, the higher your score. Unfortunately it’s not as easy as just that. You also have to hit a certain amount of points within a few turns in order to pass onto the next round.

There are, of course, colored squares to help you out. Every time you use one of those colored squares, you can use whatever letter is inside of it for the bonus round.

The Good And The Bad

On the surface it really seems like there isn’t really much to this game. Just create words that are three or more letters long and you’re all set to go but once again, this is a word game so things are not that simple.

Word games have always been a little challenging for me and especially frustrating since, as a writer, I should have a decently sized vocabulary to get through games such as this but for one reason or another I always fail miserably but I still come back for more.

This game in particular is one that I had quite a bit of trouble stepping away from no matter how much I failed. I always found that I was only a few points shy of that next level and so I kept at it.

I am going to blame the scoring system in this game for that addictiveness though. I’m not overly fond of the scoring system in this game as it seems like even the rarely used letters are not worth nearly as many points as they should be and with no ‘double word score’ bonuses, it’s hard for even a novice to really grip on and form new words.

The handling of the game is also something that takes a little getting used to as I found when I played the game in full screen mode, it would work fine but if I tried to play it in windowed mode it would end up pausing on me out of no where completely disrupting my concentration.

The other big complaint that I find I am having with this game is that there is no multiplayer mode. Normally with any word game you can find some kind of multiplayer mode but with this one it is only a single player which is a little disappointing to me. This would be a really fun game to challenge someone with.

Music

For the most part I found the music in this game to be fairly subdued with no real annoyance factor. However, there are plenty of times when I am feeling rather tense trying to figure out what word I want to use next that I wish I could hear something different. Not so much that I want the music to go away entirely (there’s a mute button for that), but just something new.

The bells and whistles are also fairly subdued with nothing that really stood out as overdone or out of place.

Overall

Word games will forever be one of my biggest pet peeves and yet I know that I will never be able to escape them no matter how far I run. This is yet another example of that, I cannot look yet I dare not look away.

If you like word games and you’re looking for something addicting to help you build up your vocabulary, this is a great way to do it though I suggest not playing it when you should be working because the work will never done.

Conclusion:

Very addicting game that has kept me from my work all night. Final Grade: 85% - B
