Pros:
Easy interface and reasonably simple gameplay that follows in the footsteps of successful big budget titles. Pleasant if not striking graphics.
Cons:
If you've played big budget titles you've seen all this before and it's likely to come off as a bit derivative of them. It's nice as a diversion but not a game you're likely to get too wrapped up in and will get bored of before too long.
Review:

Age of Castles is a reasonably priced budget Ages of Empire knock-off from developer Anarchy Enterprises which usually specializes in Tycoon clones. If you're expecting ground breaking entertainment or the next Rise of Nations, Civilization IV or Ages of Empire III, you'll be disappointed, but for 14.99 Age of Castles offers modest diverting gameplay in the medieval godgame genre.

Throwing a bit of a Warcraft subplot into the mix Age of Castles adds on evil enemies but the core of the game plays much like Ages of Empire without the cultural depth, game options or strategic breadth. It's essentially not much more than any of the other budget titles on the same wavelength trying to copy more popular games.

But if you're addicted to medieval building games or don't feel like spending twice its cost for a bid budget title, Age of Castles is pleasant enough with basically repetitive gameplay that makes for a nice pause in your day before you go back to the spreadsheets or the Ebay store. The graphics are not remotely high end but they manage to be surprisingly appealing sometimes with vistas stretching out across rivers and weather effects, something more big budget titles lack. And if you're not in the moon to upgrade your PC yet again, Age of Castles isn't going to be particularly demanding of your system resources.

So Age of Castles may be a knock off but it's a pleasant enough and affordable knock off and a good way to take a break from whatever you're doing.

Conclusion:

Decent budget title. Worth buying if you're on a budget and want a game to play for 15 minutes rather than 5 hours. Don't expect a lot and you won't be disappointed.
